• World War I Origins: The 20th Bomb Squadron traces its lineage back to 1917, making it one of the oldest active bomb squadrons in the United States Air Force. • First Combat Operations: The squadron was originally organized as the 20th Aero Squadron and flew bombing missions in France during World War I with the Dayton-Wright DH-4. • Interwar Air Races: In the 1920s and 1930s, the 20th participated in notable air races and demonstrations, helping to advance military aviation tactics and technology. • World War II Service: During World War II, the 20th Bomb Squadron flew the B-17 Flying Fortress and participated in strategic bombing campaigns over Europe, including the famous Schweinfurt raids. • Cold War Strategic Deterrence: The squadron became a key part of America’s nuclear deterrence strategy during the Cold War, flying B-47 Stratojets and later B-52 Stratofortresses. • Operation Arc Light: The 20th Bomb Squadron conducted B-52 bombing missions during the Vietnam War under Operation Arc Light, striking enemy positions and supply lines. • Historic Aircraft: Over its history, the squadron has flown a diverse array of aircraft, including the DH-4, Keystone B-3, B-17, B-29, B-47, and B-52. • Guam Deployment: The 20th was one of the first squadrons to deploy B-52s to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, supporting continuous bomber presence in the Pacific. • Global Power Missions: The squadron has routinely participated in “Global Power” missions, demonstrating the ability of the U.S. Air Force to strike anywhere in the world on short notice. • Active Today: The 20th Bomb Squadron, nicknamed the “Buccaneers,” is currently stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, and continues to fly the B-52H Stratofortress in both training and operational roles.
