ABOUT HSM-74
- Established in 1986: HSM-74, originally designated as HSL-44, was established on January 21, 1986, at Naval Air Station (NAS) Mayport, Florida.
- Nickname "Swamp Foxes": The squadron’s nickname, “Swamp Foxes,” honors Francis Marion, a Revolutionary War leader known for his resourcefulness and guerrilla tactics in the swamps of South Carolina.
- Helicopter Squadron Transition: In 2009, the squadron transitioned from the SH-60B Seahawk to the MH-60R Seahawk helicopter, prompting its redesignation from HSL-44 to HSM-74.
- Multi-Mission Role: The MH-60R Seahawks operated by HSM-74 are capable of anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search and rescue (SAR), and electronic warfare.
- Carrier Air Wing Integration: HSM-74 is attached to Carrier Air Wing Three (CVW-3), providing rotary wing aviation support to aircraft carriers in the Atlantic Fleet.
- Combat Operations: HSM-74 has participated in multiple operations, including Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and ongoing missions in support of U.S. and allied interests.
