History of VP-8

Patrol Squadron 8 (VP-8), known as the “Fighting Tigers,” was established in September 1942 during World War II. Originally flying the PBY Catalina and later the PB4Y-1 Liberator, the squadron conducted anti-submarine warfare and maritime patrol missions in the Atlantic and Caribbean. Over the decades, VP-8 transitioned to various maritime patrol aircraft, including the P-2 Neptune, P-3 Orion, and currently the P-8A Poseidon. Throughout its history, VP-8 has participated in key operations such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, Cold War patrols, and modern global anti-submarine and reconnaissance missions, earning a reputation for operational excellence.

  • Established in 1942: Patrol Squadron 8 (VP-8) was first established as Patrol Squadron 201 (VP-201) on September 1, 1942, during World War II, and has since undergone several redesignations before becoming VP-8 in 1948.
  • World War II Operations: VP-8 participated in anti-submarine warfare (ASW) patrols in the Atlantic and Caribbean, playing a critical role in protecting Allied shipping from German U-boats.
  • Aircraft Evolution: Over its history, VP-8 has flown a range of aircraft including the PBM Mariner, P2V Neptune, P-3 Orion, and most recently, the P-8A Poseidon.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis: During the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, VP-8 was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, conducting surveillance missions that contributed to the U.S. naval blockade.
  • “Fighting Tigers” Nickname: The squadron is known as the “Fighting Tigers,” and their insignia features a tiger leaping through the sky, symbolizing strength and readiness.
  • Cold War Activities: Throughout the Cold War, VP-8 conducted extensive ASW patrols in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, tracking Soviet submarines and gathering vital intelligence.
  • Rescue Missions: In 1983, a VP-8 crew aboard a P-3 Orion played a key role in rescuing Vietnamese boat people in the South China Sea, highlighting the squadron’s humanitarian efforts.
  • First to Deploy P-8A: VP-8 was among the early squadrons to transition to the P-8A Poseidon, the Navy’s latest maritime patrol aircraft, enhancing its surveillance and strike capabilities.
  • Global Deployments: The squadron has operated from numerous locations worldwide, including Iceland, Sicily, Japan, and the Middle East, supporting operations such as Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Inherent Resolve.
