  • "Convoy Ambush Alley": The unit frequently traversed the infamous "Ambush Alley," a stretch of road notorious for Viet Cong attacks, especially between An Khe and Pleiku.
  • April 1, 1971 Ambush: On April 1, 1971, the 523rd was ambushed by a large North Vietnamese force. The drivers fought back fiercely, earning several soldiers commendations for valor, including Silver Stars and Purple Hearts.
  • Truck Gunners: Due to the high risk of ambushes, the 523rd vehicles were equipped with machine guns and crewed by "truck gunners," who played a crucial defensive role in convoys—an unusual assignment for transportation units.
  • Nickname – "Gun Trucks": The company became famous for its "gun trucks"—standard cargo trucks modified with armor plating and heavy weapons to protect convoys.
  • Medal of Honor Recipient: Sergeant Larry Dahl of the 523rd was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for throwing himself on a grenade to save his fellow soldiers during a 1971 ambush.
  • “Brutus” Gun Truck: One of the unit’s most famous gun trucks was named “Brutus.” It became legendary for its firepower and the bravery of its crew in numerous firefights.
