ABOUT 60th Infantry
- Origins: The 60th Infantry Regiment was constituted on 15 May 1917 in the Regular Army and organized at Gettysburg National Park, Pennsylvania in June 1917.
- World War I Service: The regiment fought with distinction in France as part of the 5th Division, participating in major campaigns such as St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne.
- “Go Devils” Nickname: The 60th Infantry earned the nickname “Go Devils” during World War II after a German officer’s diary referenced their relentless fighting spirit.
- Normandy Landings: The regiment landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, on 8 June 1944 (D+2), and played a key role in the breakout from the beachhead.
- Crossing the Rhine: The 60th Infantry was the first Allied unit to cross the Rhine River at Remagen in March 1945, securing the vital Ludendorff Bridge and hastening the end of the war in Europe.
