History of 502d Air Base Wing

The 502d Air Base Wing is a United States Air Force unit based at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas. It is responsible for providing installation support and services to over 250,000 military, civilian, and contract personnel. The wing also supports the largest joint base in the Department of Defense, serving as a hub for training and supporting Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps operations. Additionally, the 502d Air Base Wing oversees the maintenance and operation of the installation's infrastructure and facilities.

ABOUT 502d Air Base Wing

  • The 502d Air Base Wing was activated on April 26, 1949, at Washington National Airport in Washington, D.C.
  • During the Korean War, the 502d Air Base Wing provided support to U.S. and United Nations forces in Korea.
  • In 1962, the wing was redesignated as the 502d Tactical Control Wing and provided air traffic control and tactical air control services in Europe.
  • The 502d Air Base Wing was redesignated as the 502d Air Base Wing in 1985 and reassigned to Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
  • In 2015, the wing deployed personnel and resources in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S. military's campaign against ISIS.
  • During the Cold War, the 502d Air Base Wing played a key role in supporting NATO forces in Europe.
  • In 2016, the wing deployed personnel to support relief efforts in Haiti after Hurricane Matthew struck the island nation.
