History of 42nd Air Base Wing

The 42nd Air Base Wing is a United States Air Force unit located at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. It is responsible for providing support services to over 21,000 military personnel, civilians, and their families. The wing also provides base operations, security, and medical services for all personnel stationed at Maxwell AFB. In addition, they support various tenant units and organizations on the base.

ABOUT 42nd Air Base Wing

  • The 42nd Air Base Wing was established in 1940 as the 42nd Bombardment Group.
  • During World War II, the 42nd Bombardment Group flew B-18 Bolo, B-26 Marauder, and B-25 Mitchell aircraft in combat operations.
  • The 42nd Air Base Wing is currently based at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama.
  • In 1994, the 42nd Air Base Wing was redesignated as the 42nd Air Base Wing and became responsible for providing support services to Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex.
  • The 42nd Air Base Wing has supported numerous operations, including Operation Desert Storm, Operation Allied Force, and Operation Enduring Freedom.
  • In addition to its military duties, the 42nd Air Base Wing also supports the Air University, which is responsible for professional military education within the Air Force.
  • The 42nd Air Base Wing has received numerous awards and decorations, including the Air Force Meritorious Unit Award and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.
  • One of the units under the 42nd Air Base Wing is the 42nd Medical Group, which provides healthcare services to military personnel and their families.
  • In 2019, the 42nd Air Base Wing celebrated its 79th anniversary of service to the United States Air Force.
  • The motto of the 42nd Air Base Wing is "First in Support," reflecting its commitment to providing exceptional support services to the Air Force community.
