History of 23rd Wing

The 23rd Wing is a front line United States Air Force Air Combat Command composite unit. It consists of 4 groups that provide combat ready forces to the warfighter. The wing is based at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia and focuses on close air support and precision firepower for special operations forces. The 23rd Wing has a long history of supporting global air operations and continues to be a crucial asset in military operations worldwide.

ABOUT 23rd Wing

  • The 23rd Wing was activated in 1983 as the 23rd Composite Wing and was later redesignated as the 23rd Wing in 1987.
  • The wing is stationed at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia and is responsible for providing combat-ready forces to conduct close air support, forward air control, combat search and rescue, and special operations missions worldwide.
  • The 23rd Wing's history can be traced back to World War II when it was known as the 431st Bombardment Group and flew B-26 Marauder bombers in Europe.
  • The wing's motto is "Strength through Training," reflecting its commitment to preparing its personnel for the rigors of combat operations.
  • In addition to its combat missions, the 23rd Wing also supports humanitarian missions, such as hurricane relief efforts in the United States and earthquake response in Haiti.
  • The wing is known for its close relationship with the 74th Fighter Squadron, which flies the A-10C Thunderbolt II aircraft and provides close air support for ground forces.
  • In 2018, the 23rd Wing conducted a historic deployment to the Pacific region, where it participated in joint exercises with partner nations to enhance regional security and stability.
