A Company, 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, was activated as part of the Army’s modular transformation in the mid-2000s at Fort Carson, Colorado. As a component of the 4th IBCT, the company provided crucial support capabilities, including combat engineers, military intelligence, and signal support, enabling the brigade’s operational effectiveness in both training and deployment environments. The unit deployed multiple times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, where it played vital roles in route clearance, intelligence gathering, and communications support. Throughout its history, A Company earned a reputation for adaptability and professionalism, embodying the 4th ID’s motto, “Steadfast and Loyal.”

  • Unit Origins: A Company, 4th Special Troops Battalion (STB), was part of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT), 4th Infantry Division (4th ID), activated at Fort Carson, Colorado, in 2004 as part of the Army’s modular transformation.
  • Integrated Capabilities: The Special Troops Battalion combined military intelligence, signal, engineer, and military police elements, making A Company vital for C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) operations.
  • Operation Iraqi Freedom Deployments: The 4th IBCT, including A Company, deployed multiple times to Iraq, supporting operations in Baghdad, Diyala, and Salahuddin provinces, notably during the 2006–2007 and 2009–2010 surges.
  • Support in Operation Enduring Freedom: The battalion, with A Company’s expertise, also supported missions in Afghanistan, providing crucial intelligence, engineering, and communications support to combat operations.
  • Combat Engineers’ Role: A Company’s engineers helped clear improvised explosive devices (IEDs), built forward operating bases, and repaired critical infrastructure in Iraq and Afghanistan.
