History of 17th Training Wing 

The 17th Training Wing is a United States Air Force unit based at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas. It is responsible for providing technical training and combat support training to airmen and other military personnel. The wing is comprised of several squadrons specializing in various aspects of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. Its mission is to develop and deliver exceptional intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance professionals for the Air Force and Department of Defense.

ABOUT 17th Training Wing 

  • The 17th Training Wing was activated on April 1, 1967 at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas.
  • During World War II, the 17th Training Wing was known as the 17th Bombardment Wing and was stationed in the Pacific Theater.
  • The 17th Training Wing provides intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance training to the U.S. Air Force, as well as other branches of the military and international partners.
  • The wing is made up of several groups and squadrons, including the 17th Comptroller Squadron, the 17th Medical Group, and the 517th Training Group.
  • One of the training facilities within the 17th Training Wing is the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy, which trains firefighters for the Department of Defense.
  • The 17th Training Wing has a long history of excellence in training, with numerous awards and accolades for its programs and instructors.
  • One of the most famous units within the 17th Training Wing is the 315th Training Squadron, which provides intelligence training to the Air Force and other military forces.
  • In addition to its military training mission, the 17th Training Wing also supports numerous community outreach programs and initiatives in the San Angelo area.
