History of 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (SFOD-D)

The 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (SFOD-D), commonly known as Delta Force, was established in 1977 to address the growing threat of international terrorism. Modeled after the British SAS, Delta Force specializes in counterterrorism, hostage rescue, and direct action missions. The unit gained early prominence during Operation Eagle Claw, the failed 1980 attempt to rescue American hostages in Iran, and has since participated in numerous high-profile operations, including the capture of Saddam Hussein and the elimination of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Delta Force remains one of the U.S. military’s most secretive and elite special operations units.

  • Origins in the 1970s: The 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (SFOD-D), commonly known as Delta Force, was established in 1977 in response to the increasing threat of international terrorism, particularly after the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre.
  • Modeled After the British SAS: Delta Force's founder, Colonel Charles "Charlie" Beckwith, served as an exchange officer with the British Special Air Service (SAS) and used the SAS as a model for Delta's structure and training.
  • Top Secret Selection Process: Delta Force's selection course is renowned for its intensity and secrecy. Candidates undergo physically and mentally grueling tests, including land navigation, long ruck marches, and psychological evaluations.
  • Operation Eagle Claw: Delta Force's first major mission was the failed 1980 operation to rescue hostages in Tehran, Iran. Although the mission did not succeed, it led to significant changes and advancements in U.S. special operations.
