History of 8th Military Police Brigade

The 8th Military Police Brigade was first constituted on 8 April 1967 and activated in Vietnam, where it provided critical law enforcement, security, and combat support during the Vietnam War. After Vietnam, the brigade was inactivated but later reactivated in 1984 in Korea to support U.S. forces on the peninsula, enhancing law enforcement, maneuver support, and area security. The unit moved to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, in 2005, expanding its mission to support U.S. Army Pacific operations across the region. Today, the 8th Military Police Brigade continues to provide vital military police support, ensuring security and order for U.S. forces throughout the Indo-Pacific.

  • Vietnam War Origins: The 8th Military Police Brigade was originally constituted during the Vietnam War era, activated on 26 July 1966 in the Republic of Vietnam to provide law enforcement and security support to U.S. forces.
  • Distinctive Unit Insignia: The brigade’s insignia features a green shield with two crossed batons and a key, symbolizing law enforcement and security. The colors green and gold represent the Military Police Corps.
  • Multiple Reorganizations: After its initial service in Vietnam, the brigade was inactivated in 1972 and later reactivated in South Korea in 1984 to support United States Forces Korea.
  • Garrison in Hawaii: In 2006, the 8th Military Police Brigade was re-stationed to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, where it remains a key law enforcement and security element in the Pacific region.
  • Operation Iraqi Freedom: The brigade deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, conducting detainee operations, convoy security, and police training missions.
  • Pacific Area of Responsibility: The 8th MP Brigade is the only military police brigade permanently assigned to the U.S. Army Pacific, overseeing MP units throughout the region.
  • Support to Civil Authorities: The brigade has supported disaster relief and humanitarian missions in the Pacific, including during typhoons and other natural disasters.
