- Origins in World War II: The 2nd Bomb Wing traces its heritage to the 2nd Bombardment Group, which was established in 1918 and played a key role in World War II, flying B-17 Flying Fortresses in strategic bombing missions over Europe.
- Oldest Bombardment Unit: The 2nd Bombardment Group, its direct ancestor, is one of the oldest bombardment units in the United States Air Force, having been formed during World War I.
- Cold War Deterrence: During the Cold War, the 2nd Bomb Wing was a crucial component of the United States’ nuclear deterrence, operating B-47 Stratojets and later B-52 Stratofortresses on constant alert status.
- Headquarters at Barksdale: Since 1963, the 2nd Bomb Wing has been based at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, which remains its home station today.
