History of 4th Fighter Wing

The 4th Fighter Wing is a United States Air Force unit based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina. It is a combat-ready fighter wing comprised of F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft which are utilized for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The wing has a long and distinguished history, dating back to its activation during World War II. It has participated in numerous military campaigns and exercises, demonstrating its capabilities and dedication to the mission.

ABOUT 4th Fighter Wing

  • The 4th Fighter Wing was activated on August 28, 1947 and is based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina.
  • The unit has a rich history dating back to World War II, where they flew P-51 Mustangs and earned a Distinguished Unit Citation for their actions in the European Theater of Operations.
  • In 1948, the 4th Fighter Wing became one of the first units to receive the newly-designed F-86 Sabre jet, which they flew during the Korean War.
  • During the Vietnam War, the 4th Fighter Wing flew the F-105 Thunderchief on combat missions, earning several awards for their bravery and skill.
  • In 1977, the unit transitioned to the F-4 Phantom II and later to the F-15E Strike Eagle, which they currently operate.
  • The 4th Fighter Wing has participated in numerous military operations, including Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom.
  • The unit is known for its motto "Fourth But First," which reflects their reputation as one of the premier fighter wings in the Air Force.
