History of 2nd Battalion 37th Armor

The 2nd Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, known as "Iron Dukes," traces its lineage back to the 37th Armor, first activated in 1941. The battalion distinguished itself in World War II, participating in campaigns across North Africa and Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. During the Cold War, 2-37 Armor was stationed in Germany as part of the U.S. Army's forward presence in Europe. In recent decades, the battalion has deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom, maintaining its reputation as a premier armored force.

  • Activation and Early History: The 2nd Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment ("Iron Dukes") was first activated in 1941, as part of the 4th Armored Division at Pine Camp, New York, and saw extensive action during World War II.
  • Normandy and the Breakout: The unit landed at Utah Beach in July 1944 and played a pivotal role in the breakout from Normandy, participating in the drive across France.
  • Battle of Arracourt: In September 1944, elements of the 2-37 AR fought in the Battle of Arracourt, a major tank battle where U.S. forces defeated a larger German armored force.
  • Relief of Bastogne: The battalion was instrumental in the relief of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, helping to break the German encirclement of the 101st Airborne Division.
  • Cold War Deployments: During the Cold War, the 2-37 Armor was stationed in West Germany as part of NATO forces, serving as a deterrent against the Soviet threat.
