History of 2:9th Infantry

The 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment (2/9th Infantry), known as "Manchus," is a storied unit of the United States Army with origins dating back to 1855. The battalion earned distinction during the Indian Wars, Philippine–American War, and served with valor in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, where it saw heavy combat. In Vietnam, the "Manchus" were renowned for their actions in the Cu Chi and Tay Ninh regions, suffering significant casualties while inflicting heavy losses on enemy forces. In recent decades, 2/9th Infantry has served in both Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the Global War on Terrorism, maintaining its legacy of service and sacrifice.

  • Nickname – "Manchu": The 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment is nicknamed the "Manchu," a name earned during the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900, when the regiment marched to Beijing.
  • Motto – "Keep Up the Fire!": The unit's motto, "Keep Up the Fire," originated from the siege of Tientsin during the Boxer Rebellion, where the regimental commander encouraged his men under heavy fire.
  • Korean War Service: 2/9th Infantry fought in several key battles during the Korean War, including the defense of the Pusan Perimeter and the fighting withdrawal from the Chosin Reservoir.
  • Vietnam War Deployments: The battalion served multiple tours in Vietnam, participating in major operations such as Operation Junction City and the Battle of Fire Support Base Ripcord.
  • Decorations: The 2/9th Infantry has been awarded numerous unit citations, including Presidential Unit Citations and Valorous Unit Awards for gallantry in combat.
