- Motto – "Keep Up the Fire!": The unit's motto, "Keep Up the Fire," originated from the siege of Tientsin during the Boxer Rebellion, where the regimental commander encouraged his men under heavy fire.
- Korean War Service: 2/9th Infantry fought in several key battles during the Korean War, including the defense of the Pusan Perimeter and the fighting withdrawal from the Chosin Reservoir.
- Vietnam War Deployments: The battalion served multiple tours in Vietnam, participating in major operations such as Operation Junction City and the Battle of Fire Support Base Ripcord.
