The 6940th Air Base Group (USAFSS) was a United States Air Force Security Service unit stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, during the Cold War. Activated in the early 1960s, its primary mission was to provide administrative and logistical support to USAFSS personnel engaged in intelligence and cryptologic training. The group played a vital role in preparing airmen for signals intelligence (SIGINT) operations worldwide. The 6940th AB Group remained active until the reorganization of USAFSS units in the late 1970s, after which its functions were absorbed by other support organizations at Goodfellow AFB.
6931st Security Group

The 6931st Security Group was a United States Air Force unit activated in 1970 at Iraklion Air Station, Crete, Greece. As part of the USAF Security Service (later Electronic Security Command), its primary mission was signals intelligence (SIGINT) and electronic surveillance during the Cold War, monitoring Soviet and Warsaw Pact communications in the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe. The group played a critical role in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating intelligence to support U.S. and NATO operations in the region. The unit was inactivated in 1993 following the end of the Cold War and the closure of Iraklion Air Station.
6950 Security Service

The 6950th Security Squadron, later known as the 6950th Security Group and then the 6950th Electronic Security Group, was a United States Air Force unit established in the 1960s. Based at RAF Chicksands in the United Kingdom, the unit played a key role in signals intelligence (SIGINT) operations during the Cold War, monitoring and analyzing communications related to Soviet and Warsaw Pact activities. The 6950th operated the iconic "Elephant Cage" AN/FLR-9 antenna array, collecting vital intelligence for U.S. and NATO commanders. The unit was inactivated in the mid-1990s as the U.S. Air Force reorganized its intelligence operations following the end of the Cold War.
